The higher the amount of fragmentation, the harder it is to read the data stored on your hard drive. That’s because the hard drive’s read heads have to move over different areas of the disk to access fragmented files, and that takes time. When files are sorted in a contiguous manner, the read heads don’t have to do all that work, and that results in faster performance. That is the main reason you would want to defragment your hard drive from time to time.

You can defragment your drives with the default defragmenting solution Microsoft built into the Windows operating system. But that is a very basic tool that doesn’t have much to offer. If you want a 3rd party-developed application that can prove to be better, try the Puran Software-developed Puran Defrag Free Edition.

To try Puran Defrag Free Edition, you will first have to download a 3.3MB executable onto your PC; the download will complete rapidly. After that, when you launch the executable, a setup wizard will be your guide through the installation process. Puran Defrag Free Edition works with Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, and Windows 7. It must be mentioned that during the installation process you are asked to download and install Babylon 9 – this means installing a toolbar, making Babylon your default search engine and making Babylon your homepage. You can opt not to install Babylon 9 if you want to.

Puran Defrag Free Edition’s interface is quite easy to figure out. It lists the main functions at the top, your drives below that and a report window at the bottom. To analyze a drive and see if it needs defragmenting, select that drive from the list and hit the “Analyze” button. To defragment a drive, hit the “Defrag” button instead.

That’s if you want to manually defragment a drive – Puran Defrag Free Edition can automatically defragment your drives as well. From the Automatic Defragmentation tab you can set up a scheduled task, something like defrag selected drive every 24 hours, defrag selected drives when screensaver starts, or defrag selected drives every Friday at 12AM.

An interesting feature that Puran Defrag Free Edition has to offer is the Puran Intelligent Optimizer (PIOZR for short), which promises to boost overall system speed. You can enable this feature from the “Additional Operations” tab.

Puran Defrag Free Edition’s “Shutdown after defrag” option can prove to be quite useful. Before leaving the office or before going to bed, you can manually trigger a defrag and set it so that, once the defrag completes, your computer shuts down.

As the name so adequately points out, Puran Defrag Free Edition is free. Developer Puran Softare has a paid version to offer as well. What’s the difference between the two? There is one from a functionality point of view. Puran Defrag Free Edition is free for personal use, while the paid version is meant for commercial use. The paid version can be used for free for a trial period of 30 days.

It is important to defragment your drives from time to time. Make your life easier and use Puran Defrag Free Edition for the job.

Pros

Puran Defrag Free Edition comes with a good looking and user friendly interface. You can manually trigger a defrag or you can schedule a defrag. You can defrag individual folders. PIOZR (Puran Intelligent Optimizer) will boost your overall system speed. Shutdown after defrag completes option. Free for personal, non-commercial use.

Cons

If you don’t pay attention during the installation process, you will install Babylon 9 on your system, which means installing a toolbar and changing your homepage and search engine. That may not go down well with others. On the other hand, by installing Babylon 9 you are helping keep this defrag tool free.
